new member w/ some questions!

Postby eerodg » Wed Jun 02, 2010 11:02 pm

Hey there,
I just found out about Mosrites after googling "baritone guitars."
The Eastwood Sidejack Baritone came up and mentioned it was based on the Mosrite....
That left me with 2 questions and led me here.
So:
Did Mosrite make a baritone model?
And are the Eastwood copies any good?

More about me:
I'm 32, live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I've played guitar for 20 years now and I'm starting to expand my instrument collection.
I generally play an SG thru a Bassman, but like I said, I'm in the market for more and varied gear.
Mosrites are beautiful but they look a little out of my price range...
Anyway, hi everybody!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't know anything about Baritones but I'm sure someone will be along to help with that. I know Gretsch has made them in the past as well. Good luck!

Welcome. I can't speak for the Eastwood guitars, but Mosrite never made any production baritones. They did, however, make at least two examples of custom / experimental baritones. The following thread may be of interest:

Welcome. There's nothing that beats the real deal but there are some pretty good clones too. To find out more about Eastwood guitars you might want to try doing a search on the forum (button on top righthand corner of the page). I would love to own a real Mosrite too but I'm very happy for now with a fine substite called "Hallmark". The Hallmark 60 Custom has that desirable shape of the "Ventures model" ...and the tone 8-)

Welcome aboard! I have a Lowel baritone Mosrite copy which is quite good. I've actually been thinking of selling it, as cool as it is, I just don't have much use for it. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Hi, Welcome to the forum. On the subject of Eastwood's Mosrite styled guitars I can only speak for their Hi Flyer model, I played one in March of last year. It didn't sound like a Mosrite guitar to me then and I'm sure it would sound even farther off now since I am more familiar with how Mosrite pickups sound. Also, I haven't played a 60s Mosrite to compare but I've only heard that the Eastwood Hi Flyer neck doesn't resemble a Mosrite neck. I remember the neck on the Hi Flyer was chunky and the frets were at least 35 thousandths tall, With a 60s Mosrite you'd expect a thin neck and frets about 22 thousandths tall. Perhaps you knew that about Mosrite guitars already but I'm saying it just in case. Anyway, There are Mosrite guitar reissues made by Japanese companies and there are also Hallmark's guitars which are very close to Mosrite guitars, The company even being related to Mosrite. Hallmark has a very good reputation for high quality instruments. They don't make any production model Baritone guitars though.

I have a Hallmark, too and 5 real Mosrites to compare it too. I would say, with the exception of the neck being a wee-bit wider, mine is a dead ringer. It actually sounds better than my Celebrity and Joe Maphis model when the gain is on. Those 2 tent to produce a good amount of feedback w/ the distortion on.

I've never played a baritone guitar.
In order of purchase:
1) Mosrite Ranger
2) V88
3) Stereo 350
4) Hallmark II in Johnny Blue
5) Danelectro '66
6) Celebrity III
7) Hallmark Gospel
8) Serenade
9) Eastwood 300
