Amp tech section

I would love to discuss amps. The truth is most of us will never get to own a Mosrite amp. They don't pop up very often and they're expensive when they do. I would not imagine that having an amp section would expose us to a flood of potential members who are just amp geeks. They have other, more speciality oriented forums to go to. I know I have tons of questions regarding amps.

These days I've been GASin' for a Vox Night Train head but I don't particularly care for the Vox cab. I think I'd like to make my own cab with one or two Celection Blue Alnico speakers in it. I'm very handy with wood, etc. but I don't have much knowledge, okay no knowledge when it comes to electronics. I do own a soldering iron and a multi-meter. So, I'd have a blast in a section dedicated to amp geekiness.

Another way to look at this amp thing is "What amps best voice the sound of a Mosrite or Mosrite-inspired guitar?"

Last week, in one of the two bands that I am in, we had a practice and I had left my Mosrite Celebrity at home so that I would be able to concentrate on bass. In this classic rock band, I am desperately trying to get a sense of the James Jamerson/Motown bass approach.

Anyway, to make a point during one song, I borrowed the lead-guitar player's guitar, which is what I call a super-Strat type (two single-coils and a humbucker). I just COULD NOT get a decent rhythm-guitar sound out of that guitar in the Behringer bass amp I was using there. I CAN get a wonderful sound from that amp using my Celebrity.

So there is that aspect of amps that could be interesting to all.

I mentioned a while back about how wonderful my Celeb sounded through a 1960's Ampeg Jet-12 amp. There are probably other amps that excel with a Mosrite, Hallmark, Elliott, or other similar guitar.

That's an interesting post Jim, but that's not what I'm referring to in an special amp technical section. Sorry if folks are getting that impression. I'm strictly talking about a technical section on our web site to discuss tubes, capacitors, transformers, schematics, B+ voltage, how to repair, how to scratch build etc. I'm talking about a place to ask questions if you smell smoke coming out of you amp and it's not from playing hot licks.

Hi Dan..

I really don't see the need for an amp section. All you really gotta know is that they (along with any other electronic device) runs on smoke. As long as you don't let the smoke out, no problem!

Anyway...great idea. I am looking forward to your new topic, it will be cool to learn a bit more.
