New i-pod amplifier applications

Are you hung up on the sound of tube amps, but hate to lug 50+ pounds of equipment?

I was a firm convert to small transistor amps, like the Roland Cube...until I heard my i-pod connected to a small PA system... The world has definitely turned a corner when it comes to amplification!

Take an i-pod (mine is a Touch), go to the itunes website, and download the applications for Amplitube, and Amp-kit. There are others, but these are all I will ever need. You will also need the connector, available from either company, that allows you to connect your guitar to the i-pod, and the i-pod to the sound system. Total cost, about $60.00 for the full software, and the i-Rig connector.

These two applications model famous tube amps, such as Fender, Vox, Peavey Valve King, etc. etc. The result is that you can have all the great-sounding guitar amps out there...in your shirt pocket! If there is a PA at the gig, you don't need to take an amp; just plug the i-pod into the mixer, set your levels and tone, and stand back, because the sound quality is BIG!

I jam a lot in the winter, down in Yuma, and ,most places have PA systems. My Fender is staying at home this year.

This I have to try. I used to use my third-generation iPod to record band practices and the darned thing did really well, though in mono only.

When that iPod was destroyed and I got the fifth-generation one, I stopped using the iPod for recording.
