OK Sarah I try to explain in my best english...
For plating you need a bath with a solution of nickelchlorate, nickelsulfate and boric acid. I purchased a readymixed pack of salts.
I used an adapter for the current of 3volts.
On the positive (anode) I put a nickel gauze On the negative the workpiece (kathode).
Now the nickel ions travel thru the solution from positve to negative and deposit on the workpiece.
Its important that the piece is scratchfree, polished and clean. With a current of 3volts it takes about 4 hours to get a nice plating.
Don''t try to speed up the proces by using a higher current un less you want to plate larger pieces. The result will be less shiny and there is a risk of uneven layers.
On youtube there are some vids on home platig.
Beware to wear gloves and a mask working with the salts they are toxic and avoid to contact your skin with the solution.
When the plating is done rinse thoroughly with hot water otherwise your work can turn green.
I hope this is a clear explanation?

BTW my apologies for posting some pics twice in my previous post.

Oigun - the plating looks amazing! I've read about the home plating kits before. One question - how do you dispose of the chemical bath after you've finished the plating?

Yes! Definately. I would love to see a detailed thread on this. I can see a lot of potential in this process and things that I want to do in the not too distant future. ;)

Nice job oigun, those parts look fantastic! ;)
How dare you presume to inject, using reproducible facts and rational thought, an on-topic discussion into a thread that had degenerated from sarcasm, personal invective, and hand-waving arguments?

Mel, we have a place in every city where you can deposit your chemical waste. medicines and paint. Jus need to label it correctly an they take care of it. My father is a chemical engineer and he use to work for FLUOR (now fluor-daniel) My brother and I had a minilab in the garage where we did all kind of expiriments, making bombs etc. When we wanted to get rid of our wais we just dig a hole in the ground and dumped there, but hey those where the seventies.... People where so ignorant back then....That's the way big chemical companies get rid of their stuff to, luckily there is a lot changed since then.

Don't know if you need this or not, but here it is in case someone else needs it. It's made of approximately 3/32" plate steel.

Hey Danny,

is that the plate for a bass? I have a back plate that I bought from Andy and it is 3 3/4" long by 2" on one end by 1 13/16" on the other end by 0.090" (3/32") thickness. The holes on mine are 9/32" diameter with a bit of a champfer for the screw head. I wonder if there was a difference in these plates between the guitar and bass or between the years that they were used.

sarah I think the plates are the same for both. it would make since to have one plate for both, it would save money in production cost. fender neck plates are also the same size for bass and guitar.
