Mosrite picks

Postby Sarah93003 » Mon Sep 07, 2009 9:59 am

It seems quite frequently I see Mosrite picks for sale on eBay. They are usually either green or black. As often as they pop up I wonder if they are authentic or not. Does anyone have suggestions on this? I think it would be cool to have a couple in my case just for fun.

About a year ago Jody Maphis gave me 5 black Mosrite - Joe Maphis picks. I started using them and lost 2. I'll never put another one in my pocket. They're going to stay in my "Special" picks box from now on.

Do you think the ones you see on eBay are genuine? Or, perhaps someone is making them and selling them at a hefty price (for a pick). I'd like to have one in my special pick case but I don't want to spend $10-$20 for a reproduction.

The only Mosrite picks I have ever seen from the 60's were black. I had one since the mid 60's and gave it to Desert Surfer when I sold him the '66 Mosrite. Now I wish I would have kept it. Little did I know someday I would have two 60's Mosrite guitars. If I'm not mistaken, I think it had Mosrite on one side and the Ventures on the other. If Vincent ever decides to participate on the forum again, maybe he'll tell us. As for the colored picks on eBay, it'd be my guess they are new picks from Japan.

Sarah,

Unfortunately in this day and age, nothing would surprise me if some clown got a hold of the machine to stamp those picks out for a
few cents per dozen (well, you get the idea), and charge anywhere from $4 on up and making some nice wallet money on E-Bay.

p.s...Danny, I have some Mosrite picks in that awful ugly green :shock:It says Mosrite on one side, and Joe Maphis on the other side....

I myself purchased 4 black picks from Artie years ago...he also had some really cool Mosrite pins..shaped like the Ventures guitar. I think I still have them somewhere.

Almost embarassed to be this geeky but I used mosrite picks in the 70's and 80's some. My memory is a little cloudy but the first ones had ventures on one side and mosrite on the other. Then later ones, (I don't really know where they came from), had Mia on one side and Bakersfield on the other, see pictures. Also, here are price lists from 1973, 1996, (Loretta's) and a pic from a Japan catalog from around 1999.

I have seen all 3 colors. The black and green ones wont break any way you can bend them, but the white ones will snap in half if you bend them sideways, although they don't break in the normal position. It's if the white ones had a "grain" moulded into them.
The different colors were different weights depending on the color, but they are all moulded the same actual thickness.
