Re: J i m m y's Clone
I took a couple of my 65's to band practice once and compared them to my Dan Armstrong Plexi played through a Marshall JCM 900 SLX high gain amp. The DA had all the oomph I wanted but when I put the Mosrites in I got assaulted with massive squealing which took me a bit of fiddling to tame. Once that was done I played a few songs but there was no way I could get the drive I wanted without bringing back the squeals and even then they didn't have the thick, full sound I was after. Maybe if my bass player and drummer weren't so impatient I could have mucked around with it longer and come up with the sound I wanted. I actually ended up putting a Rio Grande humbucking Mosrite replacement pickup in one of the 65's but as far as I could tell it didn't make a lick of difference. It also doesn't help when you have to compete with a very loud drummer and a bass player who uses a Marshall 400 watt valve bass amp.

Mosman, this is only because mosrite pickups aren't wax potted. this will happen to most any pickup that isn't, but some handle the squeal better then others. for a temporary fix you can take the tone knob down about 25%. or you could wax the pickup. it's not too hard to do. check these links out:

PS- be very careful about waxing pickups on the stove since a stove can get too hot very quickly, and wax is flammable. your better off using a hot glue pot, or one of these cheapo hand waxing kits made by revlon. you can probably find them on ebay or craiglist for under $20. if you have any questions just PM me.
here's one I googled.
