Hi all
Does anyone have any idea how to match the flat blue colour Mosrite painted the MkII and MkV with around 1965-1966?
I have a MkV on it's way that has been refinished and I'm toying with the idea of repainting it to match Ricky Wilson's MkV on the first B52s record. That colour looks perfect to me. Photos of that colour tend to differ in terms of how much green is in it and how rich the colour is. Plus fading and light damage can change and fade the original shade over time.
A suggestion on the Mosrite Facebook group was that it could be VW Sea Blue 1 or 2:
Does anyone have any info on what paint may have been used at the time or has anyone had a reason to try and match that colour and been successful?
I found this thread but no one had any info: viewtopic.php?t=4168
Thanks...

Are those guitars in some kind of display case. It looks interesting.

"Mod 60s"?! I meant "mid-60s"! Though that blue is pretty mod come to think of it.
You mean the last photo? That's Ricky Wilson's MkV and I believe the photo is from the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland though it's some years ago and I heard Cindy and Keith were keen to get the guitar returned so it may not still be there. Anyone know?

Update - some sites list this colour as being "Pacific Blue". I've not seen any Mosrite literature that calls it that but a Ford paint colour of the time looks pretty close:

If you find a color blue you really like that appears to match, and have an actual sample with that color, a paint store may be able to measure the sample with a spectrophotometer. That would generate values of L*a*b* they may be able to use to custom mix paint identical to your sample. It would only be as accurate to actual Mosrite blue however as the sample you choose. They may already have the exact color in stock! There are many factors that come in to play in how a color appears, lighting, angle of observer, saturation and so much more. I however cannot tell you what that color is.
